‘A Sleepwalkers Guide to Deptford’ comprises of three new artist-led walks around Deptford created by InspiralLondon artists Sarah Sparkes Joanna McCormick, Frog Morris Nicole Mollett, Mikey Vessel Georgeson for WeAreLewisham Borough of Culture supported by Lewisham Council High Street Fund. An interactive guided tour of the streets of Deptford after dark using magic lantern projectors, shadow puppetry, costumed performer, poetry and live music to bring to life the literary and cultural history of Deptford.
Taking to the street at twilight to invoke a state between dreaming and wakefulness, where the past present and future and fact and fantasy can all exist together. By moonlight we walk in the footsteps of diarists Samuel Pepys and John Evelyn, visit the grave of Christopher Marlowe, the wreckage of The Golden Hinde and recount tales of partying with Peter the Great. Along the Thames Path we hear tall tales of sea monsters and encounter old mudlarkers still roaming the shores in search of treasures. We will delve down south towards the railway arches and housing estates taking in the poet John Brown and the founders of infamous Sniffing Glue punk fanzine. On Deptford Highstreet we encounter lyricist writing and performing today.
