Graphic novel for Luton is a new publication based on real-life experiences of people who live in Luton. Lead artist Nicole Mollett collaborated with 14 local writers and artists to create a series of graphic tales about the town. The publication entitled ‘The Colossus and Other Stories’ reveals a complex web of narratives, which look beyond the stereotypes of Luton. The project engages communities, celebrates diversity, and encourages intercultural connections.
The stories include a range of topics including; the town’s regeneration, important issues such as poverty and homelessness, and the town’s diverse culture and heritage. Many of the writers have written about their sense of local pride and identity; what it means to be Lutonian.
Throughout March the artist will be working in situ in The Mall, in the shop units located on the Gallery level next to Robby’s Tearoom. There will be a series of drawing and textiles workshops happening in the shop which are free to attend.
The publication is long listed for the Laydeez Do Comics award 2020.
This project has been funded by Arts Council England, Luton Arts Fund, and supported by University of Bedfordshire Testbeds programme, and The Mall.
